Born and raised in Middleton, WI, labeled The Good Neighbor City, I didn’t have knowledge on many people living in inner city spaces. In 2004, I went down to Jackson, MS and learned from a man named John Perkins. His group taught people to think differently of inner city spaces and have a bit more respect for it as well as the people living in those spaces. Fast forward to 2006 when they were giving away houses, Alex (my husband) and I moved into the 53206 zip code thinking we would be white savors. We realized we were wrong and how big of a knot is around poverty and inner cities spaces. Through living in the poorest zip code in the state for the last 16 years, I have learned from my neighbors. I have learned that in order to make any sustainable change, you need to be a good neighbor first so that is something I strive to do daily.
